PLAY READING AND DISCUSSION: All My Sons by Arthur Miller
The program at the library is free and open to the public. No registration is necessary.
![]() On Sunday, March 20, 2011, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., the library will host a reading and discussion of All My Sons playwright Arthur Miller's first great success. The action of All My Sons takes place in less than a twenty-four hour period. The setting is the Midwestern backyard of Joe Keller in the 1940s. Complex characters illustrate Arthur Miller’s mixed feelings about war, love, greed, living life beyond one’s own family circle, and the role of father and son inside and outside the family. The drama explores greed among the middle class and reaches an understanding of the common good and each person’s responsibility to others. This winner of the 1947 Tony Award for Best Play is the story of the tragic consequences of a lapse from decency of an ordinary businessman during World War II. With a son missing in action during World War II, and the accusations that he knowingly manufactured and sold defective airplane parts that killed hundreds of American soldiers, Joe Keller’s whole life is now in question. Arthur Miller’s masterpiece hits the emotional bulls-eye. Suggested reading: All My Sons by Arthur Miller.

Page to Stage
We are happy to be offering another installment of our From Page to stage program, in co-sponsorship with the Bristol Riverside Theatre (BRT). The program is free to the public and offers a bi-monthly book discussion about the current theatrical production at the BRT.
Sunday, January 8th, 2011, we will be discussing The Little Prince by Rick Cummins and John Scoullar ![]() The story of a world-weary Aviator whose sputtering plane strands him in the Sahara Desert, and a mysterious, regal "little man" who appears and asks him to "Please, sir, draw me a sheep." During their two weeks together in the desert, the Little Prince tells the Aviator about his adventures through the galaxy, who he meets along the way, and about his strained relationship with a very special flower on his own tiny planet. The Little Prince talks to everyone he meets: a garden of roses, the Snake and a Fox who wishes to be tamed. From each he gains a unique insight, which he shares with the Aviator: "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly." Come join us at the Library from 5-6 pm on Sunday the 8th of January.

Page to the Stage Program this Sunday

This Sunday, November 21st, we will be discussing Old Wicked Songs by John Marans. ![]() Old Wicked Songs is the story of Stephen Hoffman, a brilliant American piano prodigy desperate to regain his waning creative spark. He travels to Vienna, where he studies under the forced tutelage of an old and eccentric vocal professor. The two could not be more different - one is European, the other American; one passionate; the other technical; and one an anti-Semite and the other, a Jew. What follows is a game of trading challenges, tirades, and insults revealing both the sinister and the noble sides of each man. The music of Robert Schumann, whose song cycle the Dichterliebe (the Poet's Love) is woven throughout the play, leads the characters in incredible musical storytelling. This Pulitzer Prize nominated drama is an emotional journey through joy and sadness, anger and redemption, out of which emerges healing, inspiration and music. Come and discuss this wonderful play.

Book Sales and Book Donations
The next book sale will be held 10/1/2010 - 10/9/2010.
The Library holds mammoth book sales at least twice a year, usually in the Spring and Fall, and has a smaller, ongoing book sale year-round. To receive an email reminder when we schedule a book sale, please email us. The sales, run entirely by volunteers from the Friends of the Free Library of New Hope and Solebury, contribute greatly to funding our programs. Through most of the year, we welcome donations of high quality books, CD's, DVD's and videotapes in good condition. Coffee-table books and art volumes are in particularly high demand. If we are accepting donations, and if you have only a few books - two boxes or bags, or fewer - to donate, you may bring them to the Library to drop them off when we are open. If you have more, please call or email us first. Our building is very small, and sometimes we cannot accept large donations. Please, please do not leave donations outside the door or in the book drop! We ask you to understand that we cannot accept books in poor condition, books that have been defaced or underlined, textbooks, old travel books, outdated computer books, encyclopedias or condensed books. No one buys these items, and we are forced to throw them away. Since we must pay for our trash removal, we lose money we can ill-afford when you leave us unsaleable items. Thank you for understanding!
