Review: Light of Other Days

by guest reviewer and library patron Richard Lee

What would you do if you had the power to witness any event that has happened or is happening anywhere in the universe? In this novel, Arthur C. Clarke and Stephen Baxter team up to deliver yet another fantastic work of science-fiction, this time distorting time and space itself. The novel takes place in the near future where wormhole technology has reached its peak, sending raw information and even light-rays to the viewer from one point in space to another, thus creating a world where closed doors and drawn shades mean nothing. Soon, further developments allow viewers not only to roam space, but time as well. Now, history itself is laid bare for all to see, as past glories and atrocities are stirred up once again. But can the public keep up with the dramatic societal changes that intensify day after day? Or would they embrace the freedom and entertainment of being a passenger on a roller-coaster through time? Arthur C. Clarke and Stephen Baxter thoroughly explore the implications as well as the philosophical ideas attached with the development of such a wonderful yet dangerous technology.

Review: Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day

nullby guest reviewer and library patron Amy Canike-Collins

Please turn to page 25 of Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day. Spend five minutes reading what authors Jeff Hertzberg and Zoe Francois offer as their first ultra simple basic bread recipe. By the next day you will be able to bake a wholesome, delicious and preservative-free loaf of bread.

For a few concise confidence-building techniques and explanations, review the preceding twenty-five pages. Ignore anything and everything you have previously experienced and know about bread baking. Trust them completely. Do exactly as they instruct. Trust me on this.

Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day was picked up at the library early one evening. The very next morning I mixed a batch of their white, free-form loaf master recipe for boule. By that afternoon, we ate our first successful loaf of beautiful bread.

No fuss, no muss, no kneading, no kidding! Even for the inexperienced home baker, Jeff and Zoe's system is virtually foolproof. Each minimal ingredient recipe each provides you with enough dough to bake 3-4 full-sized loaves over a period of 5-14 days. Mix the batch of dough. Until you want a freshly baked loaf, the dough remains refrigerated. You may also cut off smaller pieces of dough as you need a few sandwich rolls or at dinner for two a small baguette. Surprisingly, with their challah and brioche sweet dough recipes, you will be able to have donuts, pastries and breakfast buns freshly baked at a moment's notice.

Within the first few days of reading Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day, I mixed and baked not only the basic master recipe, but also the Italian Semolina and the Vermont Cheddar breads. In our household they were so well received, that all the batches are already gone. It is doubtful that any of the recipes will last in our refrigerator any where near the specified shelf life.

The chapters in Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day are introduced with a master (basic) dough recipe. Each master recipe is followed by several simple ingredient or baking technique variations. Then specific sandwich or serving suggestions are explained.

As well as traditional white and whole wheat sandwich loaves, all of the most anticipated bread styles are included: batard, baguette, ciabatta, rye and pumpernickel. The peasant loaf chapter offers many hearty whole grain ingredient recipes. The spontaneity of the Hertzberg-Francois bread baking system is the very essence of pizza cravings. Once the dough is in the refrigerator, the flatbread chapter enables pizza lovers to indulge themselves in a short period of time. Having a yeast tooth rather than a sweet tooth, I still highly suggest you delve into Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day's enriched breads and pastries chapter. Satisfying favorites are prepared and stored in the same way, but freshly baked challah, brioche, pecan rolls and beignets will waif from your kitchen. And, chocolate fanciers have not been ignored.

With this truly about face approach toward the normally time-constrictive, attention-intensive bread baking methods and lore of bygone days, please relax and indulge yourself and your loved ones. Their system will not disappoint.

Review: The Fighting Temptations

Run Time: 123 min.
Genre: Comedy

This heartwarming romantic comedy about gospel music hits all the right notes

The Fighting Temptations follows Darrin Hill (Cuba Gooding Jr.) a New York advertising exec who is invited back to his home town in Georgia for his Aunt's funeral. In her will she states that if Darren leads her church choir to a win in the annual “Gospel Explosion” competition, he will inherit her fortune of $150,000. The only problem is that the choir has 6 people in it and they don’t even sing that well! Soon Darrin is searching through the town for talent and meets many people, including Lilly(Beyonce’ Knowles) a local jazz singer who is the key to winning the “Explosion”; but only if he can persuade her to join. This movie is filled with tons of laughs and music and I suggest it for anyone who loves music and comedy.

Community Resources on Aging Forum Thursday August 21

The Free Library of New Hope and Solebury hosts a forum on
Community Resources for Aging:
Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Getting Older
(But Were Afraid to Ask)
on Thursday evening, August 21, from 5:30 until 7:30.

Representatives from the Bucks County Area Agency on Aging, Doylestown Hospital, and St Mary Medical Center will speak briefly, answer questions, and provide handouts for attendees.

Refreshments will be served.

Residents of New Hope Manor may call the library at 215-862-2330 to arrange for free transportation to and from the program, courtesy of Star Voyager Transportation.

Speakers include Information and Referral Supervisor Robert Behney and Apprise Coordinator Donna Damiani from the Area Agency on Aging; Vice President, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Scott Levy and Coordinator of Community Outreach Nancy Pericone of Doylestown Hospital; and, from St. Mary Medical Center, Director of Spiritual Care Richard Brochu and Kathleen Smith of the Communications Office.

“This is a perfect program for people who want to know what resources are available to them, and who want to make calm, informed decisions before a crisis hits, “ says Library Director Caroline Dechert. “We’re lucky to have such good speakers coming, and to have the opportunity to ask direct, detailed questions about medical care, home care, aging in place, advance directives, and other issues.”

The staff and volunteers of the library program committee felt this was a crucial program to offer the community. Many have worked or volunteered in hospice, and many more have had to help family members and loved ones make hard decisions about medical care and living situations. Knowing how difficult it can be to get information during a crisis, they recommended this program as the first in the library’s series of informational offerings for the late summer and fall.

The Library is located at 93 West Ferry St in New Hope, PA. You may contact the library at 215-862-2330 or <mailto:librarian@nhslibrary.org>librarian@nhslibrary.org for further information. The library deeply regrets that its space is not entirely handicapped-accessible. There is a very short group of stairs between the front entrance and the meeting space.

The Free Library of New Hope and Solebury extends its grateful thanks to the Area Agency on Aging, St. Mary Medical Center, and Doylestown Hospital for their participation; to Giant Food Stores for donated refreshments, and to Star Voyager Transportation of New Hope for donated taxi services for residents of New Hope Manor who might otherwise be unable to attend.
