Storytimes are important programs that foster early literacy skills (Letter Recognition, Vocabulary, Print Awareness, Print Motivation, Phonological Awareness, and Narrative Skills) and practices (Read, Write, Sing, Talk, and Play).

Early literacy is defined as what children know about reading and writing before they actually learn to read and write.
